Website Design and Development Book Review

In 2009, George Plumley wrote a book called WordPress 24-Hour Trainer and asked me to review it. I jumped at the chance because I was in the process of building my own website and was, in fact, using Wordpress. I found the book to be easy to use and full of helpful tips and tricks on how to use Wordpress.

Recently, I was offered the opportunity to review Mr. Plumley’s latest book Website Design and Development. Mr. Plumley took a complicated subject matter and broke it down into sections in an easy to understand and engaging manner. The structure of Mr. Plumley’s books are very well thought out and easy to navigate. He also includes quick tips and tricks throughout the book which I really like.

A DVD accompanies the book which is another way for readers to learn about important questions to ask before building a website. The DVD provides a series of videos that aim to enhance the reader’s experience, which it does with great success. The majority of questions within the book are highlighted and enhanced in the DVD with videos.

Chapters 1-3 of the book cover basic questions that should always be considered when creating a website. Domain names, website hosting and email addresses are all covered in the first few chapters and help the reader determine such things as how much to pay for a domain name, whether or not multiple domain names are a good idea, what qualities to look for in a web host, how much to pay for a host as well as things to consider when setting up an email account.

Chapters 4-7 focus on user experience and the website layout which are critical to the success of any website. In this section Mr. Plumley guides the reader through a variety of questions to consider including site design, site layout, images, color, animation, links, pop ups, site loading time, site construction and much more.

Chapters 8-10 look at website marketing and promotion, search engine optimization (SEO) and website security. Sub topics covered here include building a mailing list, back links, advertising, site optimization and protection from hackers. These 3 chapters really help the reader to consider the importance of marketing, promotion, SEO and site security which are often overlooked when building a website.

Website Design and Development Recommendation

The book is an ideal book for those who want to start a website. Every question in the book is written in an easy to understand and thought provoking manner without using any overwhelming or confusing technical jargon. If you or someone you know if planning on starting a website, then this book is a must have resource. It guides you through all the details that need to be considered when starting a website.

Website Design and Development is available in major bookstores, online and at retailers throughout North America.
